An upscale lounge bar that has a tendency to polarize visitors. Some might find Bar Rouge a terrible place, offering nothing but pretentious people, overpriced drinks and poor service. Others might love the fashionable crowd and the flair of the bartenders. What cannot be disputed is that Bar Rouge offers a lovely view – the outside balcony provides an unblemished vista of the Pudong skyline. On the downside, it must also be accepted that there’s a good chance of being hassled by bar girls at Bar Rouge and that the drinks aren’t the best quality: all the more irritating when an average mixed drink or cocktail costs ¥80. Bottled beer is on offer for an equally overpriced ¥50. Music is generally generic house, but it’s not so important given that there’s no real dance floor. Bar Rouge is worth trying out at least once, even if you decide you hate it. If nothing else, with a crowd that is predominantly foreign and wealthy, there is a touch of old-school colonialism in the air. What better way to get a feel for the Shanghai of the past?
