BAM was originally conceived to be a musical concert hall in the late 1800's but now has extended its media to all performing arts and film. It has become a cultural center located in the borough of Brooklyn, with a mission to support local arts projects as well as hosting international festivals in contemporary performing arts such Next Wave, bringing international artists to NY. The Brooklyn Philharmonic is based there as well as a cafe, music venue and cinema. BAM is regarded as one of NY's most esteemed performance venues.
