Franz Anton Cramer is a German freelance dance critic and author based in Berlin. He gives dance-related lectures and seminars at various universities and dance academies, and has worked for the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Performance Research, ballettanz, and currently contributes to Sarma, an online project collecting various dance writings and criticisms. His work has shifted in recent years from a journalistic approach to one that interprets and explores contemporary dance performance and how it is seen by the spectator.
Cramer was originally trained in classical dance and mime, working in France until he moved to Berlin to study Romance languages and literature. He completed his Ph.D. in 1998, completing a monograph about Etienne Decroux, a French actor and theoretician.
