In seinem Text “Über Deckerinnerungen”, von 1899, thematisiert Sigmund Freud, wie Erinnerungen durchlässig und in veränderter Form wiederaufgerufen werden können. Die Deckerinnerung gibt die temporäre Trennung zwischen dem Bewusstsein und dem erinnerten Objekt wieder. 1925 griff Freud bei seiner “Notiz über den ‘Wunderblock’“ dieses Konzept wieder auf, wobei er vorschlägt, dass ein einfaches Spielzeug für Kinder vielleicht eine gute Metapher dafür darstellt, wie Erinnerungen in der Psyche wirken. Mit dem Anheben der transparenten obersten Folie, verschwinden die Linien und eine neue Zeichnung ist möglich. Dennoch lässt der Druck der zeichnenden Hand Spuren zurück, welche auf einem Medium unter der durchscheinenden Oberfläche aufgenommen werden. Mit dem Bezug zu diesen Ideen wird die Ausstellung „In A Shadow Box“ die Galerie in eine Dunkelkammer verwandeln, welche die Ontologie der Zeichnung untersucht. Der Besucher ist eingeladen, an einem assoziativen Gedankenspiel teilzunehmen, welches die versteckten Strategien der Erinnerung fokussiert. Durch die Medien Folie und Glas entsteht ein bewegtes Archiv, welches Bilder und Zeichnungen durch Licht und Schatten auftauchen und verschwinden lässt. Auf den Wänden werden Bilder fluktuieren, als wären sie geistige Vorstellungen, die Schopenhauer als eine Art Erkenntnisprojektion beschrieb und letztendlich als viel mehr flüchtige und vergängliche Erinnerungen in den Blick bringen.

In his 1899 text “Screen Memory,” Sigmund Freud considers how memories are permeable and can be recalled in an altered state. The screen memory refers to the temporal separation between the consciousness and the object of memory. In 1925, Freud revisits this concept in “A Note on the ‘Mystic Writing Pad,’” in which he suggests a common children’s toy might be a metaphor for the way that memories accumulate in the mind. With the lifting of the transparent top page, figures are erased, and new drawings can be made; however, the pressure of the writer’s hand leaves behind traces, recorded on a medium just beneath this diaphanous surface. With reference to these ideas, the exhibition “In a Shadow Box” will transform the gallery space into a dark room for exploring the ontology of drawing. Like a shifting archive of images, unique drawings will appear and dematerialize into shadow and light through the media of transparency and glass. The viewer is invited to take part in an associative thinking process about the latent strategies of remembrance. Images will fluctuate upon the wall as if those imaginings of the mind, which Schopenhauer once described as a kind of cognitive projection, can be rendered ever more fleeting and ephemeral.

Isabel Lewis: Performance for Crystal Ball Gallery 20.03.10

Isabel Lewis is a performance artist and curator who developed her professional career in NYC. She is now based in Berlin and continues to work between her new home base and NYC. She creates solo performance works for galleries and theaters as well as collaborates with her family in the performance collective LEWIS FOREVER. In this performance Isabel transmits to the audience instantaneous responses to some of the works from the In A Shadow Box exhibition, engaging the audience in a playful dialogue about fiction, perception, and the notion of activated spectatorship. This performance is based on ideas developed with LEWIS FOREVER: The family becomes an art collective, the gallery becomes a meeting place, the audience becomes a family and hence collaborators.
