Monetny Dvor is a German/Russian joint with the obligatory German sausages and beer snacks accounting for a large portion of the menu. Housed in an authentic old workshop, the restaurant has an atmospheric and cozy interior. The summer veranda has a view onto the Iset River, which is no more than a trickle of water in this area of town, and the Historical Square. But there's so much noise in the area that it's not all that nice outside. Good-looking waitresses whose appearances are enhanced by their German costumes provide attentive service. Food is fairly cheap at about $12 for a main course and beer starting at $3 for the local brew. Credit cards accepted.

This German-style restaurant and bar in Xintiandi is one of three outlets of the Paulaner Brauhaus in Shanghai. While there is nothing particularly special about the place it somehow manages to stay full much of the time. The house beer is pricey at ¥80 per 500mL, but it’s hard to complain about the generous size of the hearty meals served here. Filipino cover bands and ho-hum service completes the picture.
