Hope is a belief in a positive outcome related to events and circumstances in one's life.

In a religious context, it is not considered as a physical emotion but as a spiritual divine grace. Hope is distinct from positive thinking, which refers to a therapeutic or systematic process used in psychology for reversing pessimism. The term false hope refers to a hope based entirely around a fantasy or an extremely unlikely outcome.

In my own work I use the concept of ‘affect’ as a way of talking about that
margin of manoeuvrability, the ‘where we might be able to go and what we might be able to
do’ in every present situation. I guess ‘affect’ is the word I use for ‘hope’. One of the reasons
it’s such an important concept for me is because it explains why focusing on the next
experimental step rather than the big utopian picture isn’t really settling for less. It’s not
exactly going for more, either. It’s more like being right where you are — more intensely. (Massumi)
