This 5-star hotel in the Confucius Temple area is an excellent choice when they’re offering their discounted rates. The spacious executive rooms at the Mandarin Garden Hotel are quite lovely, bathed in washed-out golden hues and dripping with all the expected amenities. The rack rate for these rooms is ¥1480 ($206), but they are a steal when discounted as low as ¥860 ($120). Standard rooms are smaller but equally attractive with a rack rate of ¥980 ($136) and discounted as low as ¥540 ($75). Prices include a buffet breakfast. The only downside is that many of the rooms have a very limited outlook. Recreational facilities are excellent with an extensive fitness center, indoor swimming pool, roof-top tennis court and numerous Chinese and Western restaurants. The Mandarin Garden Hotel also has extensive business facilities (conference rooms, etc) but the location in the Confucius Temple area is probably better suited to tourists. Staff speak very good English and are pleasant.

This classy joint has a great location on the Songhua River, about ten minutes walk along the riverside from Zhongyang Dajie pedestrian street. Originally built in 1954 as the Sino-Soviet Friendship Hotel, the building is an intriguing combination of Chinese and Soviet architecture – a sort of looming Soviet building ‘with Chinese characteristics’ if you will. They’ve made good use of the location with some lovely gardens in the hotel courtyard looking onto the river. Amenities are also pretty good with full business facilities, and leisure facilities including a fitness center, massage room, sauna and several restaurants. Service is decent with English-speaking staff, but more could be expected of a hotel that is aiming to upgrade to five star status. The rooms are a bit of a let-down as well – there’s nothing wrong with them but they aren’t special in any way. Satellite television and free internet access are a bonus. Rack rates start at ¥688 ($95) for standard rooms while suites start at ¥1588 ($220). Expect these prices to be discounted by 30% or more, which makes the Friendship Palace Hotel quite good value. Many of the rooms also feature a view of the river across to Sun Island Park.
