Isadora Duncan (1877 - 1927) was an American dancer and choreographer and is considered by many to be the Mother of Modern Dancer.

She came from a very poor family and would give dance classes to try to help out with the finances. In 1895 she made the decision to move to Europe, settling in Paris after living one year in London.

Barefoot and dressed in diaphanous scarves, she created an improvisational, primitivist style of dance in her studio/home on Rue Danton. Because she thought that the ballet aesthetics that were unpopular at the time were ugly and went against the natural body, her style was directly oppositional by focusing on emotion and the natural human body. Her work inspired other artists working in many feilds, including jewelry and art. She founded three schools during her time abroad in Germany, France and Russia.

Duncan's life came to a sudden end in 1927 when, at the age of 50, she got into a convertible in Nice, France, wearing one of her trademark flowing scarves which wrapped around one of the back wheels while the car was going full speed. She was strangled and killed instantly.
