Nicely laid-out jazz club with a classy interior that plays host to some big name artists. A newer player in the Shanghai jazz scene, JZ Club is just down the road from mainstay Cotton Club. The main focus is on the stage with the bar unobtrusive and reasonably easy to access at the back. Although set over two storeys, with the stage visible from both levels, JZ Club is still a bit too small to handle the crowds who come for the bigger artists and there aren’t enough seats to go around. Otherwise the interior is very nice with dark wood furniture, red drapes and chandeliers. For some reason the decorators decided to throw a disco ball into the mix as well. Drinks are a bit pricey but the cocktails and mixed drinks are good quality. Carlsberg draught is ¥50, spirits start from ¥50 and cocktails range from ¥60 right up to ¥100. One problem with JZ Club is that the crowd has a tendency to talk through performances – not just the occasional comment, but loud, continuous conversation – which irritates by the lack of respect it shows for the performers. Check JZ Club’s website for details of performances and be sure to check the place out if you get the chance.
