The famous Russian theater director, Stanislavsky was perhaps the first to undertake a thorough study of actor's psychology and craft.

The set of his findings, beliefs, and ideas are called Stanislavsky's System and have then been used and applied by most directors worldwide, especially in film.

Stanislavsky's System cultivates the art of experience ("искусство
переживания" in Russian, which can also be translated as "the art of suffering" or "the art of empathy"). This state is recreated in an actor's psyche and soul using several techniques, which Stanislavsky named "psychotechnics".

The main idea of the system is that an actor should be aware of "presupposed circumstances" (who? where? when? how?) and the "scene action" (what's the purpose of that particular action or scene? is there logic?). The "psychotechnics" also works a lot with stimulating actor's imagination, attention ("circles" and "lines" of awareness), muscle release, and finding the creative task (what is my task in this particular action or scene?).
