John Dwyer of 1,007 different bands (including The OhSees, The Oh Sees and formerly OCS, Orange County Sound, Orinoka Crash Suite) began as a way for John Dwyer (of Coachwhips, Pink & Brown, Landed, Yikes, Burmese, The Hospitals, Sword & Sandals, Superpit, The Drums, The Trawgs, Zeigenbock Kopf and Dig That Body Up It's Alive!) is in Thee Oh Sees and he seems to be making this band the most serious project. He's done everything from noise to death metal to punk and now this.

An atmospheric bar, restaurant and live music venue, Zhest is a real treat. The basement-level club attracts an easy-going and friendly crowd. The restaurant/bar hall has a nice vibe running through it and is stylish in an understated way. It makes for a perfect place to eat or just to drink. The second hall with stage and bar is quite small for live concerts but makes for an intimate atmosphere. Zhest doesn’t attract big-name acts very often but they do manage to get some great up-and-comers. The club’s menu is full of cheap and tasty options. The big business lunch (weekdays from 12pm-5pm) which includes soup, salad, main course, dessert and a drink costs just 125 rubles ($4.50). Waiters and bartenders are efficient and friendly, although the management can be difficult.

13 Club is a quality, down-to-earth venue for live music. Style-wise the club has a grungy, bare-bones look. The only real decorations are posters, graffiti and some flags, while the rest of the place is dark and dirty. 13 Club hosts live shows without fail every Friday and Saturday and often puts on (usually) free concerts on weeknights as well. For big concerts tables are removed to make space for sweaty crowds, but at other times the venue boasts ample seating. When there’s no one on stage there’s a pool table and foosball table for amusement. Drink prices are fairly standard for 13 Club’s university district location – bottled beers ¥20-25, spirits and cocktails starting at ¥20 and maxing out at ¥35.
