Meaning is generated in a system when different pieces of information are related as messages to one another, for example, as words in sentences (Hesse, 1980; Law & Lodge, 1984). The information is then positioned in a network with an emerging (and continuously reconstructed) structure. This positioning can be done by an individual who – as a system of reference – can provide personal meaning to the events; but meaning can also be provided at the supra-individual level, for example, in a discourse.
