A sophisticated and elegant Thai restaurant that serves up quality food at reasonable prices. Purple Haze features an aesthetically pleasing decor with purple-toned walls and curtains contrasting with yellow table cloths, all of which is cast under a dim glow. The only downside in the atmospheric stakes is the background music which consists of easy-listening pop/rock. The sizeable menu has a focus on seafood for the main courses. Salads and starters average around ¥35-40, curries and meat-based main courses cost about ¥45, while seafood mains average around the ¥90 mark. The extensive wine list starts at ¥130 for a bottle while beer is available for ¥10-25 and spirits and cocktails sell for ¥30. It’s strange that a restaurant with at least 50% foreign patronage employs some waiters who can’t, or at least choose not to, speak English. Purple Haze is always crowded so it’s a good idea to make a reservation on weekends. The restaurant's second location, a little further east along Gongti Bei Lu, has a popular live jazz session on Wednesday nights. See the restaurant's website for details.
