Sergei Donatovich Dovlatov (Mechik) (3 September 1941, Ufa – 24 August 1990, New York) was a Russian short-story writer and novelist. Most of his books were written in the 70s and 80s and often had a very ironic style full of dialogues, bitter satire, and jokes. Making fun of the life in Soviet union, disgruntled people, apathetic public, and every day stupidity of the Soviet reality he was not in favor with the government and had to emigrate in the 80s to New York. He continued writing there and several of his novels were translated in English and published in New Yorkers. Russia did not have its own beatnik movement, but perhaps Dovlatov played a similar role, although much later than it happened in the US.

Relationship description

Although Dolvatov was writing much later, you will like his style if you like Kerouac and perhaps if Beatnik ever happened in Russia, he would be the local Kerouac.

Relationship description

Highly recommended for his short stories full of bitter irony. His novel "Zona" ("Prison") is a very interesting take on the life of prison guards who gradually lose the purpose and get confused as to whether they are guarding the prisoners or vice versa (Dovlatov's take on the life under Soviet government).
