Steve Paxton is an American dancer and choreographer, a founding member of Judson Dance Theater. He danced with Merce Cunningham and José Limón, and with Judson Dance Theater in the works of Yvonne Rainer and Trisha Brown. In 1970 he created a breakaway group from Judson, called Grand Union. This was a group that focused on improvisation, and through their research the movement form known as Contact Improvisation was developed.
