A classy beer restaurant just off that famous riverside promenade of Shanghai, the Bund Brewery serves up light and dark micro-brewed ‘Bundlander’ beer. The darkly lit German-style bar boasts an appealing interior, with solid, wooden furniture and a simple, effective design, that is cheapened only by the big, bizarre, arty portraits that adorn the walls. The home brew, priced at ¥48 per 500mL, is surprisingly good – thick and a little sweet – and apparently made according to traditional Bavarian methods. Patrons can also imbibe on spirits from ¥55 and cocktails from ¥65. The menu offers a range of international dishes, many with a Spanish influence, at an average price of ¥70-80. The Bund Brewery deserves credit for offering something a bit different: both its house beer and the simple fact of being a dark, brooding atmosphere of the interior. It’s a good bar to start a night or have a few beers with friends, assuming they can hear you across the gigantic tables.
