A fun, down-to-earth venue where a non-pretentious crowd dances to Top 40 style hits of the past and present, Zapata’s is a good choice for any night of the week. Split over two floors, the main action takes place downstairs where patrons writhe on a long, narrow and crowded dance floor. And while management encourages party-goers to dance on the long bar-top, they forbid patrons removing their clothes (WTF?). Upstairs is a more chilled-out space playing less mainstream tunes, which serves as a great sanctuary when the ground floor antics begin to overwhelm. As does the small beer garden, where makeshift bars allow you to buy drinks without battling the crowds inside. Prices are average for Shanghai with draught beer at ¥40 and cocktails from ¥50, though frequent drink specials reduce these prices. The Ladies Night on Wednesday with free margaritas for women until midnight draws a very big crowd that fills even the beer garden. Zapata’s also offer a good menu of Mexican food until 10:30pm with a main course costing an average of ¥90 and there are burritos available from a small kiosk in the beer garden all night long.
